§I — The feeling

You already know.

You knew it on a Sunday evening last winter, sitting in a kitchen that wasn't quite warm enough, and the feeling came up unannounced — I cannot do another week of this. Then Monday arrived and you did another week of it. The feeling went back into the box where you keep it. It will come out again. It always does.

It comes out at three in the morning when you can't sleep. It comes out when an old friend asks what you're working on now and you hear yourself begin a sentence you've started a hundred times before. It comes out when you read about somebody your age who has done something — not famous, not even particularly large, just theirs — and you feel a flat, unfamiliar heaviness behind your ribs that has nothing to do with envy.

You have not been able to name that feeling. So you do not name it. You return to the work that pays the bills, that uses your competence, that people have congratulated you for, and the feeling waits.

This is the book about the feeling.

§II — The frame

Most life-purpose advice fails because it skips the inner work.

For twenty years the standard advice has been some version of follow your passion. It sounds humane. It is, in practice, almost useless.

It fails for three reasons:

i.
It assumes you already know what your passion is. You do not, or you would not be here.
ii.
It assumes a passion will translate into a life. It will not. A passion without a craft is a hobby. A craft without commitment is a résumé bullet.
iii.
It assumes that following an inner feeling is enough. It is not. The reason most people in their thirties and forties have not yet found their life's work is not laziness, and not lack of talent. It is that they have been given the wrong instructions.

Berufung is a different method. Built on depth psychology, the philosophy of mastery, the literature on flow, and fifteen years of private practice with founders, artists, and people in mid-career transition. It works because it does the slow, disciplined inner work first.

§IV — The reader

Who this is for.

You are mid-career and competent at something you didn't choose. The salary is fine. The life is not.

You are a founder between ventures, tired of starting things you don't finish.

You are a creative who has stopped creating, and you can't quite explain why.

If any of these is uncomfortably specific, this book was written for you.

§V — Readers

What readers are saying.

"I bought it sceptical and read it twice. The four worksheets did more for me in a weekend than two years of coaching. I finally know what to stop doing."
Lena K. Product lead, Berlin
"Most career books are platitudes wearing a suit. This one earns its 230 pages. I'm rewriting the next phase of my company because of it."
Andreas M. Founder, Zürich
"Reinhardt doesn't sell you a dream. He hands you a scalpel and shows you exactly where to cut. Uncomfortable in the best possible way."
Sofia R. Strategy consultant, Milan
"The Me Sheet alone is worth the price. I now keep one at my desk and revisit it every quarter. My team thinks I had a midlife crisis. I think I had a midlife correction."
Marcus T. Engineer turned coach, Hamburg
§V — The method

The method.

Seven stages, in order.

I.
A line-drawn labyrinth — the symbol of Part I, where the buyer maps why they feel stuck
Labyrinth
Why you're stuck
II.
A line-drawn eye — the symbol of Part II, on seeing one's situation clearly
Eye
Seeing clearly
III.
Two open hands drawn in gold — the symbol of Part III, on what the right work feels like in practice
Hands
How the right work feels
IV.
A line-drawn ship's anchor — the symbol of Part IV, on committing instead of dabbling
Anchor
Commitment over dabbling
V.
A balanced pair of scales — the symbol of Part V, on naming what you value
Scale
Knowing what you value
VI.
A many-pointed compass rose — the symbol of Part VI, on locating your one-sentence vocation
Compass
Finding it
VII.
An open doorway drawn in gold lines — the symbol of Part VII, on walking through it
Doorway
Living it

Each Part builds on the previous one. By the end of Part VI, you have, in writing, a one-sentence statement of your life purpose. Part VII is what to actually do next.

§VI — The author

About Sebastian Reinhardt.

Sebastian Reinhardt is a Swiss business coach and entrepreneur who has spent fifteen years working privately with founders, partners, senior operators, and people in mid-career transition across Europe and North America — helping them identify the work that is theirs alone to do, and the practical steps to actually build a life and a business around it.

He trained in philosophy at the Universität Zürich and in depth psychology at the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich, then spent the better part of a decade outside academia — co-founding, scaling, and eventually exiting two operating companies in technology and design — before returning to a sustained one-on-one coaching practice. He continues to advise founders and executive teams privately while writing. He lives between Zürich and the Engadin.

Berufung distils the method he has refined over more than a thousand client sessions, applied at the intersection of inner work and the demands of building something real.

§VIII — Questions

Frequently asked.

How long is the book?+
Around 230 pages — readable in a weekend, workable across a year.
What format do I get?+
PDF and EPUB. The worksheets are designed to be printed.
I've read other life-purpose books. Why this one?+
Most life-purpose books skip the inner work and tell you to "follow your passion." Berufung is the opposite — it spends the first half on the disciplined inner work of separating your authentic values and strengths from the inherited ones, then uses them to construct the purpose statement. By the end, you have a sentence, not a feeling.
How long will the work itself take?+
The exercises in the book can be completed across two to four weeks of focused effort. The vocation that results is a multi-decade commitment.
Is there a refund policy?+
Yes — 14 days, full refund, before you download. Don't open the files or send them to your Kindle until you're sure: once delivery of digital content begins, EU consumer law (and our policy) ends the right of withdrawal, and you confirm that at checkout. If you've already downloaded and the book genuinely didn't land, write to us anyway — we look at those case by case.
Will I need to buy anything else?+
No. The book includes the values list, all the worksheets, and a full reading list of further books if you want to go deeper. None of those further books are required.
